The Philosophy of Race (Hardcover, New): Albert Atkin The Philosophy of Race (Hardcover, New)
Albert Atkin
R4,139 Discovery Miles 41 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

" Atkin] succeeds in creating new paths for breaking through epistemic boundaries of how one typically thinks about race and, by doing so, provides an opportunity to rethink current beliefs and practices regarding racism. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through researchers/faculty." - M.W. Westmoreland, Villanova University, CHOICE (May 2013) "Atkin crisply addresses the ongoing reality of race and racism after the disconnection of race from biological science. Comprehensive, balanced, clear, engaging and accessible for all academic levels." - Naomi Zack, University of Oregon Race is so highly charged and loaded a concept it often hampers critical thinking about racial practice and policy. A philosophical approach allows us to isolate and analyse the key questions: What is race? Can we do without race? What is racism and why is it wrong? What should our policies on race and racism be? The Philosophy of Race presents a concise and up-to-date overview of the central philosophical debates about race. It then builds on this philosophical foundation to analyse the sociopolitical questions of racism and race-relevant policy. Throughout, the discussion is illustrated with a wide range of examples: Afro-American 'blackness'; British-Asian racial formation; Aboriginal identity in Australia; the racial grouping of Romany-Gypsies and Jews in Europe; categories of race in Brazil; and the concept of model minorities in the US and UK.

Peirce (Paperback): Albert Atkin Peirce (Paperback)
Albert Atkin
R868 Discovery Miles 8 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) is generally regarded as the founder of pragmatism, and one of the greatest ever American philosophers. Peirce is also widely known for his work on truth, his foundational work in mathematical logic, and an influential theory of signs, or semiotics. Albert Atkin introduces the full spectrum of Peirce's thought for those coming to his work for the first time. The book begins with an overview of Peirce's life and work, considering his early and long-standing interest in logic and science, and highlighting important views on the structure of philosophical thought. Atkin then explains Peirce's accounts of pragmatism and truth examining important later developments to these theories. He then introduces Peirce's full accounts of semiotics, examines his foundational work on formal and graphical logic, and introduces Peirce's account of metaphysics, the least understood aspect of his philosophy. The final chapter considers Peirce's legacy and influence on the thought of philosophers such as John Dewey and Richard Rorty, as well as highlighting areas where Peirce's ideas could still provide important insights for contemporary philosophers. Including chapter summaries, suggestions for further reading and a glossary, this invaluable introduction and guide to Peirce's philosophy is essential reading for those new to his work.

Dr Albert Atkins
R473 Discovery Miles 4 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For the last decade, Dr. Albert Atkins has conducted extensive research on the Vietnam War. This research has taken him to the cockpit of a B-52 where he could see and feel the cramped battle stations for the pilot and co-pilot. As a former military pilot, he saw and understood the complexity of the eight engine bombers' instrument panel, hundreds of switches, and the circuit breaker panels that these B-52 pilots had to master to fly a successful combat mission. He attended reunions and seminars where he had the opportunity to listen and talk to general officers and combat crew members of the Strategic Air Command relate their personal experiences in the air war over North Vietnam. Dr. Atkins researched material relating to decisions made by presidents and their National Security Advisors during the Vietnam War. Under the freedom of Information Act, he obtained CIA documents with information about North Vietnam and China that could have altered the course of the war. He has uncovered new material on Operation Linebacker II, the B-52 bombing missions of Hanoi that were responsible for freeing our Prisoners of War. Dr. Atkins is to be commended for his 10 years diligent research. He makes a strong case that after 11 Days of the B-52 bombing the Hanoi area, "WE HAD WON THE WAR." The problem was the only people that understood this were the combat crews who flew the missions and support personnel who made Linebacker II a success. Unfortunately no one in Washington asked their opinion. As Dr. Atkins book points out, a similar mistake happened in another war. James R. McCarthy Brig. /Gen. (USAF ret.)
